The School
Corazon de Maria is a full immersion school meaning not only will you be speaking entirely in Spanish during classes and activities but you also have the opportunity to eat both breakfast and dinner with a local family. Our teaching is based around three main methods: in-class learning which involves both theoretical and conversational learning, mini conferences which provide valuable lessons in cultural history, and activities which offer a fun way to put your new knowledge into practice.
Classes
-
Our classes are one-on-one and will be facilitated by one of our eight qualified teachers.
-
Classes can start any day of the week.
-
Classes are usually five hours per day Monday to Friday and a include a midway 30min break. Students are able to choose whether they prefer mornings or afternoons.
-
Following an assessment exam to determine your incoming level of Spanish your course will be tailored to your needs and can be adapted if you want to learn something specific.
-
Theoretical and practical assignments assist in the development of your Spanish comprehension. These include: reading and listening comprehension, conversation, and written expression.
-
At the end of each week you will be assigned a small exam based on the material we have covered over the previous five days.
Mini Conferences
-
These lectures offer students a chance to learn the history of Guatemala, from the Mayans who once reigned in nearby Tikal, through the conquistadors who arrived in the 1500s, to the recent history of our 36-year civil war — a struggle that ultimately birthed Nuevo Horizonte.
-
Mini Conferences will be lead by both instructors and other community members who have a deep understanding of our origins and stories.
-
Mini Conferences usually last between 30 and 90 minutes.
Activities
-
Extra-curricular activities are organized by teachers three to five times a week.
-
They’re main purpose to give a break from theoretical learning and offer a fun way to integrate your newly gained knowledge.
-
They change depending on the student’s interests so just let your instructor know what you’re into and we’ll design fun outings for you to enjoy.
-
These can include: Walks through the community and the Forest of Life (our 94-hectare designated park), a guided tour of our museum, trips to the lagoon, camping excursions, karaoke, horseback riding, sports, dancing, and movie nights.
Required/Recommended Materials
-
A notebook and pen or pencil which can be purchased at one our local stores.
-
A Spanish to English dictionary or app on your phone is encouraged as all classes are taught in Spanish. Having one of these can help move classes along and minimize confusion.
-
Another app we recommend is called “Verbos.” It offers full verb conjugation which is a vital piece to learning Spanish. You will be taught verb conjugation in class but this is a great tool for post-class time.
-
A desire to learn! As with most things you will get what you put into the program so if you dedicate yourself to Spanish during this time your results show it.
