Our History

In the centre of Nuevo Horizonte is a Ceiba tree surrounded by a heart of stone. It is a dedication to our beloved Capitana Maria and the rest of the brothers and sisters who fought alongside us in the mountains of Guatemala during our 36-year civil war. It is a symbol of incalculable struggle, the spirit of solidarity, intelligence, dedication, and sacrifice that embodied our recent history. It is a dedication to the lives lost in defence of this land which now sustains us with corn, fish, lemons, meat, and honey. It is a dedication to our past which, as hard as it was, gave life to the community we now have and love.

Founded by members of the Northern Front of the Rebel Armed Forces (FAR) in 1998, our cooperative is the result of our intentions to create a better world for our children. This shift from guerrillas to community leaders allowed us to put our energy into positive growth rather than battling injustice and persecution. Our rifles became tools, military strategy became productive strategy, and our home became more than a shifting landscape. Now we have schools for our children to attend, safety in our streets, and the opportunity to build the future we envisioned, one piece at a time.

One of those pieces is our Spanish School named after our dear Capitana Maria. On behalf of the General Assembly — the highest authority of our cooperative — and the Board of Directors, we invite you to join us, in a community rich in history and brimming with life, to learn Spanish and more.
