Volunteer Opportunities

At Nuevo Horizonte we believe in connection through solidarity meaning that we encourage students and tourists to get involved with local projects outside of class time. Not only does this help the community and improve student’s Spanish, it also creates meaningful relationships between community members and visitors. The cooperative has five collective projects — Reforestation, Fish Farming, Livestock, the Community Store, and Solidarity Tourism — that students are able to volunteer time towards.

Reforestation

Initiated 18 years ago our reforestation of the Guatemalan pine species, Pinue Caribaea, was a project first deemed impossible by many due to degradation of the soil. Today we now have 145 hectares of healthy trees that contribute to the natural ecosystems, create local jobs, and provide commercial opportunity in lumber sales.

Fish Farming

Included in the expansive property of Nuevo Horizonte is a picturesque, small lake we call “La Laguna”  or “The Lagoon.” Aside from offering tourism potential and natural fishing we have created a fish farm in its centre. Containing roughly 35,000 tilapia or “mojarra" the farm gives us sustenance and also profit through commercial sales.

Livestock

What started out as seven head of cattle has grown into a herd of 500. With ample land to roam and graze our cows, which we use for both milk and meat, live comfortable lives in the beautiful rolling green hills of our property.

Community Store

This shop or “tienda” offers community members and visitors basic products at market prices. There is also a second store operated by a local women’s group.

Solidarity Tourism

…………...

While participation is not mandatory it is highly encouraged as it creates a more authentic immersion experience, benefits our community, and allows you to put class theory into practice through real-life situations.
